DTG Usability Text To Speech Subgroup White Paper (002)

The document attempts, from a user requirements perspective, to outline the minimum requirements each TTS enabled product should adhere to, thus generating a common method for delivering text to speech. In other words, it describes what shall / should be supported by TTS enabled product in case implemented. For example, it shall be possible to speak the Logical Channel/Service number. Furthermore, guidelines on how to present receiver information as TTS audio are described.

This document attempts to provide implementation guidance on the behavioural operation of a device that supports TTS functionality. For example, how should a receiver with a TTS implementation behave when certain actions are performed? i.e. what type of text should be spoken and when? The product referred to within this document may be of one of two types: embedded, where TTS is embedded directly into the DTT platform, and external, where TTS is provided external to the DTT platform.

A separate specification has been produced for Text to Speech functionality on Sky, Sky + and Sky + HD satellite receiver boxes deployed in the U.K. and in the Republic of Ireland which describes the messages available, the interface and the protocol in which they are provided to an external TTS unit. The functionality available largely corresponds to that specified in the Main Profile section (4.1) of this document. The specification is referenced BSKYB-CTEC-EPGTTS-SPEC-09-001.
