DTG approach to COVID-19

Dear Members, Partners and Customers,

Together, as we face a truly unprecedented situation affecting all our families, communities and businesses, I wanted to update you on how we are approaching the situation at the DTG.

Firstly, our hearts go out to all those impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. Our Council and Board cannot over-stress that the well-being of our industry and team remain our priority.

Secondly, putting viewers front and centre, we will do all we can to support our members as they work tirelessly to ensure the ongoing resilience of television; it continues to play an important role at the very heart of society.

Finally, we are working hard with individuals across the industry to minimise the business impact, not least at a time of restricted international travel, embracing virtual working and, where safe and practical, on site at DTG Testing.

In summary, the following measures and working practices are in place:

  • Meetings: Virtual (Teams or GoToMeeting)
  • Events: Virtual or Postponed
  • Testing and Development: Working virtually and onsite as required (subject to Government advice, safe travel arrangements and adequate social distancing)

We continue to monitor the situation and do all we can to operate our business as usual. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the team with any questions.

Best regards,

Richard Lindsay-Davies, CEO

DTG Summit POSTPONED – A message from DTG, CEO, Richard Lindsay-Davies

Dear Members, Partners and Customers,

We are writing to inform you that Future Vision, DTG Summit 2020, which was scheduled to take place Wednesday 6th  May 2020 in London, has been postponed due to concerns surrounding the rapidly evolving situation related to the coronavirus (Covid-19).

The event will now be taking place on  Monday 5th October 2020 . All arrangements and tickets being transferred to the new date.

We have not taken this decision lightly and the well-being of our members, clients, partners and staff is paramount, this together with corporate travel restrictions has led DTG to delay the Summit until the Autumn.

We have been closely monitoring the situation surrounding the Covid-19 virus and many of our members and partners have expressed concerns about travelling at this time. We believe that rescheduling DTG Summit, Future Vision to Monday 5th  October 2020 is the most appropriate course of action.

In its place a  State of the Nation: UK Digital Television Innovation, webinar will run at  2pm on 6th May 2020 . Introducing the first of what will become annual datasets and analysis, providing a snapshot of the industry’s significant contribution to the British economy and society. An important elevator pitch to Government, investors and international partners which will set out the value the UK contributes as a world leader in the sector. More information on how to sign-up will be available soon.

All other DTG and DTG Testing activities remain business as usual  and will be supported with virtual participation capabilities.

Our thoughts are with everyone who  has  been affected by coronavirus and wish them a full and fast recovery. We would like to thank you for your understanding, patience and continued support for DTG and the DTG Summit.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to Future Vision, the DTG Summit on 5th  October 2020.

If you  have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.

Best regards,

Richard Lindsay-Davies, CEO, DTG

DTG publishes refined version of the latest UK TV specifications in D-Book 12

LONDON, MONDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2019: The DTG has released the latest version of the D-Book, the only universally deployed technical standard for TV and digital terrestrial television (DTT) in the UK. The D-Book is updated annually with the collaboration of industry, underpinning Freeview, YouView, Freesat, EE TV, BT TV and TalkTalk TV.

Requirements that are no longer necessary have been removed from D-Book 12 to respond to the continual evolution of the DTT platform. Previously, this included High Definition (HD)/Standard Definition (SD) Logical Channel Number (LCN) switching and Broadcast Record lists, as well as the complete removal of the Standard Definition receiver profiles.

For D-Book 12, the required receiver update mechanisms have changed as a result of the shutting down of the Engineering Channel. Updating remotely i.e. via a network connection or locally from a flash drive (or similar) is still required in all cases. Additionally, because of the increased availability of SVOD services, the chapters describing UK-specific Common Interface and Conditional Access requirements have been removed.

As the complexity of the platform increases, the importance of interoperability and test and conformance is greater than ever. The success of Freeview and Freeview Play continues and is largely down to the reliable products and services on the UK DTT platform.

The D-Book continues to be the foundation of all UK DTT-based platforms including Freeview Play, Freeview HD, YouView, EETV and NowTV and the UK DSAT platform, Freesat, as well as several international adaptations. The DTG continues to ensure European harmonisation wherever possible while meeting the needs of the rapidly developing and highly successful UK TV market.

Richard Lindsay-Davies, CEO of the DTG said; “The D-Book uniquely specifies every TV sold in the UK supporting the key principle of universality, namely that Public Service Broadcaster (PSB) programmes should be available to everyone, free at the point of use. The critical tenet will remain at the centre of our work as we embrace the converged media future of UK television. ”

Owen Jenkins, Marketing Director, Freeview said; “In an ever-evolving TV landscape the DTG remain guardians of reliability which is so crucial for today’s consumers.”

The DTG team give thanks to all who have contributed to D-Book 12 which is available to DTG Members for FREE and can be downloaded from dtg.org.uk/publication/download_d-book/. Non-DTG Members can purchase the D-Book for £50,000.

About The D-Book

The DTG has published the D-Book since 1996, updating the specification annually to keep apace of the development of UK DTT. The D-Book defines the DTT platforms in the UK and provides requirements for interoperability in clear, unambiguous language. Based on international standards, it is produced by a collaborative approach of industry experts. Where appropriate, it delivers harmonisation with other international bodies, enabling manufacturers and service providers to deliver products to market.
