What is the Radio Equipment Directive?
The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU became effective from 13th June 2016 with a 1 year transition period and replaces the Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) Directive 1999/5/EC.
The main impact of the change is that broadcast receivers are now under the scope of the RED whereas they were previously excluded from RTTE.
This means from June 13th 2017 EU equipment must meet the essential requirements of RED to be sold in EU member states and the European Economic Area.
CE marking can be used on equipment that has fulfilled the RED requirements. In order to demonstrate this, a range of new ETSI standard have been developed which manufacturers must test against.
RED Requirements
Red requires compliance with a set of essential requirements:
• Article 3.1(a) Health and safety
• Article 3.1(b) EMC
• Article 3.2 Radio
• Article 3.3 additional requirements when invoked by the European Commission
How to comply to RED
RED compliance is possible by two means:
• Testing your product against a harmonised standard, products that pass can presume conformity to RED – see here for RED harmonised standards tested by DTG Testing
• Notified Body EU Type Examination – assessment of the product for conformity to RED by an authorised body such as DTG Testing
Notified Body assessment (EU Type Examination) is required where there are no applicable harmonised standards for the product or the harmonised standard has not been applied in full.
